It’s like that for the many tramps, the cripples, the last metropolitan philosopher, the mendicant at the foot of a statue, the baby gypsy, the corpse-remover, the orange jacket with a bell … The Cathedral in its majestic testimony with its thousand statues from past ages and its heavy weight of history rises as the centre of gravity for the human spectacle.
